Read It and Weep

Books take you to fantastic places and teach you things you would never learn in school. Independent reading paired with a formal education is the ultimate learning experience!

ED 411-Pete the Cat:I Love My White Shoes

Pete The Cat: I Love My White Shoes - Eric Litwin, James Dean

This is a good book for beginning readers. Pete the Cat is a very relaxed cat who does not get upset when bad things happen. I would implement this book in the classroom as a way to talk about stress and how to handle it. This book is intended for K, 1st, and 2nd grade.

ED 411-A Bad Case of Stripes

A Bad Case of Stripes - David Shannon

This is a great book about self-image. This book shows how you can lose who you are when you try to be someone you're not. I would implement this book in the classroom as a way to talk about peer pressure and not conforming. This book is intended for 1st, 2nd, 3rd grade.

ED 411-No,David!

No, David! - David Shannon

This is a great book for young readers. This is a story of a boy named David who always gets in trouble. David does not like to get in trouble, it makes him sad. His mother makes sure to remind him that he is loved. I would implement this book in the classroom when reminding the class of the rules. This book is intended for K, 1st and 2nd grade.

ED 411-House of Many Ways

House of Many Ways - Diana Wynne Jones

This story takes place in the world of Howl's Moving Castle. Charmain goes to help take care of her sick great uncle who also happens to be a wizard. What she thought was going to be a simple job turns into a wacky adventure full of wizards and sorceresses, a door that leads to more than one place, missing royals, and plenty of crazy antics. I would implement this book in then classroom as a writing exercise. As the class was reading the book, I would have them write a story of their own adventures if they were in Charmain's shoes. This book is intended for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders.

ED 411-Castle in the Air

Castle in the Air - Diana Wynne Jones

This story is based off Arabian Nights: One Thousand and One Nights. This story takes place in the world of Howl's Moving Castle. Abdullah spends a lot of his time daydreaming. When his dreams start coming true, he is thrilled until things start to go bad. Abdullah must set off on a quest to save the princess and live happily ever after. I would implement this story in the class room to teach cause and effect. I would have students create individual charts to fill in while reading the story. This story is intended for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders.

ED 411-Howl's Moving Castle

Howl's Moving Castle - Diana Wynne Jones

This is a great fantasy book. This is the story of Sophie, a girl who is all set to live out her dull fate as the oldest daughter until she meets the wizard Howl. After that everything is turned upside down as she is turned into an old woman by the Wicked Witch of the Waste and becomes Howl's housekeeper. The story follows Sophie's adventures as she tries to figure out the mysteries around her. I would implement this book in the classroom as a way to teach about making predictions and using contextual evidence to hypothesize the answer to questions the students would write about the story as we were reading the book. This book is intended for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders.

ED 411-The Two Princesses of Bamarre

The Two Princesses of Bamarre - Gail Carson Levine

This book is a fantasy story about two sisters that could not be more different. When brave Princess Meryl catches the Grey Death, cautious Princess Addie must set off on a dangerous quest to look for a cure. I would implement this book in the classroom as a way to address stereotypes. I would then work with the class to create an anchor chart to show the change in the characters from the beginning of the story and at the end. This story is intended for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders.

ED 411-Fairest

Fairest - Gail Carson Levine

This is book is a retelling of the classic Snow White story. It takes place in the same world as Ella Enchanted. Aza is a girl who lives in a land where two things are valued, music and beauty. Aza is an amazing singer but she feels she is so ugly that she hates looking at her reflection. On her quest to become beautiful, Aza learns that beauty comes with a price. I would implement this book in the classroom as a way to teach about retold fairy tales and self-acceptance. I would have students make a venn diagram comparing the book to the original story. This book is intended for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders.

ED 411-Ella Enchanted

Ella Enchanted - Gail Carson Levine

This is a great book! It is a funny and charming retelling of the classic Cinderella story in the magical land of Frell. Ella is cursed to do whatever she is told and must find a way to break her curse before she is forced to do something terrible. I would use this book in the classroom as a study of variations of fairy tales. I would have students make a venn diagram comparing the book to the original story. The intended audience for this book is 4th, 5th and 6th graders.
